Our Income Protection+ is a long term policy that pays out if, during the policy term, your client can't work and suffers a loss of earnings due to illness or injury. It pays a proportion of your client's income to help support them financially whilst they are unable to work or for a fixed period of time.

We know only too well what an impact illness and injury can have on earning a living. As one of the largest insurers in the UK, that's why we've created a flexible policy that can be designed to suit individual needs.

Our policy offers much more than just basic financial protection. Getting back to work can present a number of challenges. Our claims team offer a range of support services that can help. These services can mean the difference between being off for a couple of weeks and being unable to work for a much longer period.

Here are some of the things you need to know about our Income Protection+ policy:

Full cover to term

  • Pays the benefit for the time the client is unable to work and suffers a loss of earnings for each successful claim.
  • No limit on the number of claims that can be made.

Limited payment term

  • Pays the benefit for a maximum of 24 months for each successful claim.
  • No limit on the number of claims that can be made.

  • The plan must end before your client's 71st birthday.

  • The policy term can be in full years or until the client reaches a specific age.
  • The minimum age a policy can end is age 50.

  • Subject to maximum age limit.

  • Premiums are payable monthly by direct debit.

  • 65% of the first £10,000 of gross earnings, 55% of everything above this up to £100,000 of gross earnings, and 45% of any gross earnings above £100,000 to a maximum of £240,000 a year (£20,000 a month).


Option Maximum Detail Notes

Fracture cover

Max age at entry 59
  • Pays up to £6,000 if your client suffers from one of 18 specified fractures.
  • Fracture cover is available for an additional premium.
  • The benefit will be removed from the policy when a life covered reaches age 70.

Global treatment

Max age at entry 74
  • Global treatment provides access to expert second medical opinion and leading overseas medical treatments for your client and their children.

  • Cover renews every 3 years and is available for an additional premium.

Increasing cover Max age at entry 59
  • The cover amount will increase each year in line with RPI or by a fixed percentage of 3% or 5%. If the cover increases so will the premium. The increase automatically happens on an annual basis.
  • If the RPI does not increase, or your client chooses not to accept the increase then their cover amount and premium will remain the same.
  • Please note that in the event of an increase the premium will increase at a higher percentage rate than the cover amount. For RPI increases, the maximum the cover amount can increase by is 10% and the premium could increase by a maximum of 15%.
  • Your client can choose not to increase their benefit amount if they don't want to pay the higher premiums and we'll reinstate the increasing cover option the following year.


Benefit Notes
Waiver of premium
  • If we accept your client's claim, we'll pay their premiums 13 weeks after they stop working due to illness or injury, or when their deferred period ends, whichever is sooner.
  • Your client will need to start paying their premiums again when their claim ends.

Back to work benefit

  • We'll pay a reduced benefit which takes into account any partial loss of earnings due to illness or injury.

Maternity, parental or adoption leave or the first 3 months following redundancy

  • If your client is ill or has an injury during the first 52 weeks of maternity, parental or adoption leave or within 3 months of being made redundant, we will base their claim on their occupation and earnings prior to this leave.

Restricted benefit

  • Restricted benefit applies if your client's circumstances fall outside of those covered under maternity, parental, adoption or redundancy leave as set out above.

  • If your client is not working before their illness or injury, benefit will be paid for a maximum of 12 months.

Hospital benefit
  • Pays £100 a night for a maximum of 90 nights during the policy term.
  • Your client must be in hospital for more than six consecutive nights.
Family carer benefit
  • Family carer benefit is paid if your clients' spouse, civil partner or child suffers from an illness or injury that means they can't perform certain activities for more than three months.
  • Pays the benefit amount or £1,500 per month, whichever is lower.
  • Benefit is paid for a maximum of 12 months during the policy term.
Trauma benefit
  • We'll make one payment of six times the benefit amount or £40,000, whichever is lower, if your client suffers one of six traumatic events.
Deferred period for NHS doctors and surgeons
  • Client must be a doctor or a surgeon employed by the NHS.
  • Your client must set up a policy with a dual deferred period of 26 and 52 weeks.
  • We'll reduce the deferred period, subject to a minimum of 4 weeks, meaning we'll start paying benefit to cover the client's NHS earnings when their sick pay from the NHS reduces or stops.

When you recommend one of our protection policies to your client, you can relax, safe in the knowledge that we’ll be there for them and their families when it really matters. Of course this means we’ll be on hand with financial support if the worst should happen. But with our policies, you get so much more than that.

Bupa Anytime HealthLine

Bupa Anytime HealthLine is a telephone support service that gives your client access to a qualified nurse 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Your client can use this service to get answers to any questions or concerns they may have about a specific medical condition or to get practical advice on their general health and well being. They can also use the service with regards to their loved ones - for example, if they are worried about their children's health.

Physio treatment (just for the policyholder)

Aches and pains in muscles and joints can affect anyone, at any time, and they're all frustrating. Income Protection+ includes support to help your client restore body movement after an injury or illness, and they can contact this service twice a year for different problems.

Physio treatment provided by IPRS Health, is available on Income Protection+. Using the benefit couldn't be easier - all your client has to do is call on 0870 756 3750. They'll get a clinical assessment over the phone with a qualified clinician who'll talk through their symptoms and assess the severity of their condition.

Depending on the outcome, your client will be offered either:

  • an online personalised programme of exercises, supported by videos and emails with more information and guidance, and follow up calls to check on their progress; or
  • access to our network of physiotherapists for treatment in their local area, so they can assess your client's symptoms face to face. We'll provide up to three physiotherapy sessions at no extra cost to your client.

Second Opinion by Best Doctors

Second opinion by Best Doctors gives your client access to their network of medical experts who can give them answers to any questions they may have. Once your client has contacted Best Doctors, they will collect their medical records and choose the best medical specialist for their condition. The doctor will then review your clients' case, providing their expert medical opinion in a report which includes:

  • Confirmation of your clients' diagnosis
  • Treatment recommendations

Counselling and carer services

Life can be tough sometimes, so it helps to have someone you can turn to. That’s why each of our protection policies includes access to counselling and carer support services provided by Workplace Options.

Workplace options offers face to face or telephone based support for your client and their family, giving help with:

  • Mental wellness issues such as bereavement, work-related stress and relationship breakdown.
  • Facing the challenges that come with being a carer.

Mother and childBeing there when it matters most

Income protection claims can last for months, years, or in some cases decades. When recovering from illness or injury, getting back to work can present a number of challenges. Our claims team offer a range of support services that can help. Our support is tailored, so your client will benefit from the services that could specifically help them. Our claims team includes clinicians and specialists in rehabilitation, psychiatry and physiotherapy.

There'll be advice from our intervention team on medical services that may help, such as physiotherapy or psychiatric therapy. Our rehabilitation claims visitors can talk about the state benefits your client may be able to claim while they can't work - and our claims consultants will also be on the end of the phone to answer any questions and provide support throughout your claim and illness.
